Excella MICR Check Reader Double Sided Scanner USB2/ENET

One reviewer said about the Checkmat CMR430 POS MICR Check Reader, “This is a very strange device. It comes with a power adapter and no place to plug the power adapter in. The instruction manual seems to imply there may be a cord (connector) and will be a sheet (that shows how to set it up), but no such connector cable was with it or sheet.

The pin arrangement on the device seems at least to a certain degree, to be unique to the brand. If you want this particular device to work, you may end up buying a $50 cord. Even with that, how does it power up without a power port? I ended up getting a used Magtek [Featured Left] and looking up the part numbers for the connector cable and power supply. It all came together and it can read checks.”

About the Excella by Magtek

The Excella Check Reader is a MICR check reader (Magnetic Ink Character Recognition) and dual-sided scanner with endorsement printer. Checks can be entered into the Excella with an automatic feeder or by a separate manual feed for single checks. The Excella reads the MICR character set (E13B or CMC7 fonts) on the front face and bottom of a check and scans both sides of the check in a single pass, producing high-quality, grayscale or black/white images (color images are offered as an option) in the most common file formats used in the industry. The characters and the image are then transmitted to a Host device. Excella will communicate with the Host system using a USB 2.0 or Ethernet interface.

Reviewing Forbes Magazine, August 2011

On page 28, Rich Karlgaard is interviewing Jim Goodnight, who is the cofounder, chairman, and CEO of SAS, which makes business analytics and business intelligence software. One of Goodnight’s answers surprised me. When Karlgaard (who Goodnight kept calling “Rich”) asked “What do you make of your growing list of competitors?” Goodnight answered:

Unless you can drill down through the data and come up with a probability that a customer is going to leave you next month, you’re not really in the advanced-analytics business.

You can read more of Rich’s work at Digital Rules. Want to learn more about business analytics?

On page 32, Quentin Hardy covers Proctor & Gambles’ new Business Sphere by interviewing P&G’s Chief Information Officer, Filippo Passeerini. Apparently, this Business Sphere business analytics software is “a sum of 14 different technologies from multiple vendors” and in “Three clicks on a laptop [it can] bring up a view on another screen of shampoo sales in Australia. It’s immediately apparent that P&G will need to sell 585,000 more cases of shampoo for sales to be flat.” I thought that was impressive.

You can read more of Quentin’s work at Forbe’s Data Driven and more about P&G’s Business Sphere here.

And on page 48, William Baldwin writes, “Who Needs Bank Branches? Good-bye tellers. Hello, mobile apps,” which is mostly about how more and more people are eschewing traditional banks for accounts at brokerage firms with similar features, but without the branches. He continues on page 49 with, “Who needs a drive-through teller window anymore? You can scan a check with your mobile device, and it goes right into a Fidelity or Schwabb account. Banks can do a lot of things that Fidelity can’t, like issue loans and service small businesses. But Fidelity doesn’t particularly want to be chasing after borrowers for a car payment or rolling up quarters for a convenience store.”

Mobile Remote Deposit Capture

I thought this mobile remote deposit capture webinar from Wausau might be something you all would be interested in learning more about. As you may already know, Chase and PNC are already doing this and according to Mercatus LLC, a leading financial services strategy firm in Boston, “Mobile check deposit ranks as the top mobile-banking feature that would prompt consumers to switch primary banks.”

And if you are looking for something more physical to learn about remote deposit capture, there is a RDC Summit being held September 28-30 in Orlando, Florida. It’s sponsors and/or exhibitors include FIS, RDM Corporation, Wausau Financial Systems, Panini, Digital Check, Epson, Bluepoint, NCR, Mitek Systems, and Cachet Financial Solutions. Registration starts at $799 if you register before June 30th.

If mobile remote deposit capture is still a little to risky for your bank, but you have not yet embraced remote deposit capture, consider how a cost-effective remote deposit solution for small businesses would allow your customers to streamline their check deposit process, manage their receivables and reduce the trips made to the banking centers. Remote deposit solutions enables your customers to scan paper checks and have the scanned images of the checks electronically transmitted to your Items Processing department for deposit directly into their checking account without leaving their office. And now, you don’t even have to settle for the check scanners available from your vendor or your bank as many different models are available online for a competitive price.

Best Printer for Printing Checks

If you’re looking for the best check printer, the best printer for printing checks is the Samsung ML-2525 mono laser printer which features Samsung’s AnyWeb Print software. It lets you select, drag and drop content from different web pages into a new blank page on your screen without any other resizing or editing required, making it easy to print what’s on your screen. The ML-2525 also gives you an ESP Easy Screen Print button that lets you print your desktop with a single button. You also get print speeds of 24 ppm and a 12,000 page monthly duty cycle. The ML-2525W gives you Ethernet and wireless connectivity.

Like one reviewer said, “Add a ChecksNet CheckToner MICR cartridge and you have a fast little desktop printer to make magnetically encoded checks. The ML-2525 is faster, quiet and doesn’t jam paper like other Dell, Hp and prior model Samsungs I’ve had on my desk. paper tray holds 250 sheets which is almost double other under 4100 B&W laser printers.”

25 Most Influential People in Cash Management

Institute of Financial Operations Names 25 Most Influential People Setting Global Trends in Cash Management

Public officials, banking executives, technology innovators, visionaries, academicians, and thought leaders made the first-ever list of the 25 Most Influential Financial Operations Professionals. The list was released during Fusion 2011, an annual conference and trade show at the Gaylord Palms Hotel & Convention Center near Orlando.

The Institute of Financial Operations created the recognition to honor people whose contributions have furthered the professions that fall under the umbrella of the association and its affiliate organizations: International Accounts Payable Professionals (IAPP), International Accounts Receivable Professionals (IARP), the National Association of Purchasing & Payables (NAPP), and The Association for Work Process Improvement (TAWPI).

The new Institute is the standard-setting body and primary resource for professionals in all disciplines of financial operations and at all levels, from the CFO through the ranks of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payments, document automation, and procure-to-pay.

“As our organization has moved into the broad spectrum of financial operations, it’s time to recognize leaders in our industry,” said Thomas M. Bohn, president and CEO of the Institute. “These are the people who are driving our industry in the short term and medium term, and identifying leading-edge solutions our professionals need to put into action.”
